Chemistry is the science that television handles worst. Physics gets scale and spectacle, biology gets animals, and chemistry gets a man in a coat pouring one colourless liquid into another. The Mystery of Matter is a serious attempt to solve that problem, and its solution is to treat the periodic table as an unfinished investigation rather than a finished chart.
What it is
The Mystery of Matter: Search for the Elements is a PBS documentary in three episodes of one hour each, directed by Stephen Lyons and Muffie Meyer. It premiered on 19 August 2015 and describes the search for the basic chemical elements, structured around the contributions of seven scientists.
Like most PBS documentary work, it reached its audience through member-station schedules rather than as a national event, which is why so many people first met it as a line in a local television listing, in southern California, on KOCE, the member station serving Orange County and the wider Los Angeles region.
Why the structure works
The choice to build the series around individuals rather than around discoveries is what separates it from the standard treatment.
A chart of the elements presents chemistry as settled. It is a grid, it is on the wall of every classroom, and it gives no indication that anyone ever disagreed about it. The historical reality is that for most of the period the series covers, nobody knew how many elements there were, whether the list was complete, or what principle should order it. People were arguing, and the arguments were about evidence.
Taking that seriously changes what a discovery looks like. Isolating a new element in the eighteenth or nineteenth century did not mean finding something; it meant demonstrating that a substance could not be broken down further, using only balances, heat, electricity and reagents. The claim was always negative and always provisional, which is why the field kept revising itself.
The episode everyone remembers

The reason that story survives every retelling is that it is a genuine case of a formal insight rather than an experimental one. Mendeleev did not discover a new substance. He found an arrangement, ordering the known elements so that chemical behaviour recurred at regular intervals, and the arrangement turned out to be predictive. Gaps in his table implied elements nobody had seen, with properties he could estimate in advance, and some of those were subsequently found.
That is the strongest possible demonstration that a classification is describing something real rather than imposing tidiness. A scheme that merely organises what you already know cannot be tested. One that leaves labelled holes can be.
What it does not attempt
Three hours cannot cover the modern periodic table, and the series does not try. The elements assembled in particle accelerators, the ones that exist for fractions of a second, the argument over where the table ends: none of that is really the subject.
Nor is it a chemistry course. Someone who wants to understand periodicity as a consequence of electron shell structure will need a textbook, because the series is about how the pattern was found rather than why the pattern exists.
What it delivers instead is the part usually left out: that the most familiar object in science education was assembled slowly, by people who did not know whether they were right, out of evidence that was much weaker than the finished chart implies.
The seven
Building three hours around seven scientists forces a set of choices, and the choices are where a documentary of this kind either earns its running time or wastes it.
The constraint is that the history of the elements has no single protagonist and no clean arc. It runs from alchemy through the isolation of individual substances to the ordering principle, and then through radioactivity into the modern table, across several countries and two centuries. Follow every thread and you get a list. Follow one and you distort the field.
Choosing a small number of figures and staying with each long enough to show them reasoning is the compromise that works on television, and it comes with an acknowledged cost: everyone omitted looks, by omission, less important than they were. The alternative, a survey narrated over stock footage, is what the format usually produces, and nobody remembers it.
The series was directed by Stephen Lyons and Muffie Meyer, which is worth noting because documentary authorship is often invisible. Its decisions about whom to follow, and how long to stay with an argument before resolving it, are directorial rather than editorial.
